Max Larena and Mariam Omar Gómez visited the Philippines this summer. Mariam was travelling around, meeting collaborators, collecting DNA data and immersing in the languages and cultures of the region she focuses on in her PhD work.
- Bakle Festival (Rice harvest thanksgiving festival) in Kiangan, Ifugao, Philippines
- A visit to the National Museum in Kiangan, looking at the textiles from the region (history and meaning)
- OCSEAN Conference in Udayana University, Bali. We discussed the linguistics, archaeology, and genetics of Southeast Asia with researchers affiliated with the OCSEAN Consortium. Mariam gave a talk about the Maternal History of the Philippines there.
Workshop in Archaeogenetics at Ateneo de Manila University. A full-day workshop in Manila about archaeogenetics, with some lectures about genetics and Ancient DNA given by Maximilian Larena (Uppsala University, Sweden), Bastien Llamas (University of Adelaide, Australia), and Hugo Reyes-Centeno (University of Kentucky, USA). We also had time allocated for group discussions about different relevant papers. The final part was a practical lab led by Mariam Omar Gómez and Leonard Taufik (University of Adelaide), where we demonstrated how to sample a location for archaeological remains.
